Henri Roger made his
first pictures in 1880.
His love for photography was carried over his daughter Helen.
Helen met Jean Fischer and together they bought a shop and archive from a
collector of photos in de Seine street.
In 1938 Roger-Viollet Agency was found. „Fischers“ on their
journeys collected pictorial documentation from all over the world.
In Paris they had acquired many collections of great photographers as
Branger, Lipnitzki a Laure Albin-Guillot. These collections constituted
several milions of shots. In their last will Mr and Mrs Fischer transfered
their property and collections to the ownership of city of Paris. It
happened on january 1994, when the Roger-Viollet Foundation arised to bring
the heritage to prosperity and make it a true
landmark of the city. This exhibiton reflects its position.
We can admire changeable and unknown Paris, Paris built up with World
exhibitions, which were repeatedly running in the capital city from 1867
untill 1937, but we can admire fashion ,transportation ,trade, everything
what made Paris to change. The image of streets had also changed on the
course of a century. Roger-Viollet gives out a unique, vivacious and
touching testimony of that course.
